Fix: Windows 10 Slideshow Not Working
Now, this is a really annoying issue and by keeping this thing in mind I decided to gather all the possible solution to troubleshoot the desktop slideshow issue.
1. Reboot your system
The first troubleshooting suggestion is to perform a quick system reboot and check this fixes the issue or not.
1. Find Out if Desktop Slideshow is Enabled
If Desktop background slideshow feature is not enabled by you, then Windows 10 slideshow will not work. So it is recommended to check if Windows 10 background is set to Slideshow. To check this:
1. Launch Settings app. For that, WIN + I.
2. Click on Personalization -> Background.
3. In the right pane, Under Background section check if Slideshow choice is picked instead of Picture or Solid color.
In case, the slideshow is chosen and still Windows 10 slideshow is not performing, then try other suggestion. On the other hand, if Picture or Solid is selected, then use the drop-down and select Slideshow.
2. Check Number of Desktop Background
When you enable desktop slideshow in Windows 10 then system ask you to choose a folder in which all the wallpapers or photos are stored that you want to use in the desktop slideshow.
In case, desktop wallpaper slideshow feature is not functioning, then it is recommended to check if the selected folder has more than 2 photos. The slideshow feature will not work if it has only one photo.
If you really want to take advantage of this feature, then I recommend you to have at least 4-5 wallpapers or even more. To select wallpaper folder, you’re required to:
Launch Settings app -> Personalization -> Background.
On the right pane, under “Choose album for your slideshow” click on Browse button and navigate to wallpaper folder where you have stored all the pictures.
3. Slideshow – Picture Switch
According to some users, they tried both suggestions discussed above but failed. They manage to make Windows 10 slideshow working by doing following steps:
Settings app -> Personalization -> Background.
On the right pane, under Background section switch to Photos from Slideshow.
Wait for few seconds…
Again switch to Slideshow from Photos. By doing this these users able to fix Windows 10 slideshow not working issue.
4. Change Wallpaper Folder
In case, all the solutions discussed above fails to fix the issue. You can try to change the folder with all the pictures for desktop slideshow feature. With default settings, the system uses Photos folder for slideshow feature. To make changes you’re required to:
1. Launch File Explorer.
2. On the left pane, click on Pictures -> Saved Pictures folder
Now here you’re required to copy all the pictures from Picture folder to Saved Picture folder which you have to include in Slideshow album.
3. After that, launch Settings app -> Personalization -> Background. On the right pane, under “Choose album for your slideshow” section click on Browse button and select Saved Picture folder in which you have transferred all the pictures in 2 step.
That’s it. I hope this fixes the issue.
5. Uninstall Newly Installed Desktop Customization Apps
In case, while reading this article you reached this suggestion, then it is confirmed that so solution helps you in fixing the issue. In this situation, the reason why Windows 10 slideshow not working because of the desktop customization software installed recently.
So if you have installed any, then uninstall it just to troubleshoot the issue. To uninstall apps go to:
Settings -> Apps -> Apps & features. On the right pane, look for the software you want to install click on it and press the Uninstall button.
6. Install Another Desktop Theme
In case, Windows 10 desktop slideshow feature is now working for a particular theme, then try to install another theme and check if it is working fine or not. To download and install the latest theme in Windows 10 navigate to:
Settings -> Personalization -> Theme. On the right pane, click on “Get more themes in store” link. It will take you to Windows Store theme section. Here you can download and install the theme of your choice.
All the best!
I hope any of the solution discussed above will help you in fixing Windows 10 slideshow not working. For more assistance drop your query in the comment.

The new Settings interface in Windows 10 doesn’t allow selecting multiple files at once as the desktop slideshow. You can only select one folder at a time. Also, the images in the subfolders are not utilized for the slideshow.
As a workaround, people used the old Desktop background Control Panel interface by running one of these commands from the Run dialog:
Since the Windows 10 Creators Update, those two commands will no longer launch the classic Control Panel applet. To make desktop background slideshow see the images in subfolders, follow one of these methods.
Method 1: Launch Old Background Control Panel UI using Shell: command
First, add the folder(s) containing images to the Pictures Library, and then follow these steps to configure desktop slideshow using the old Control Panel interface.
For example, I have a folder named
Camera
which contains two subfolders namely 2016
and 2017
. The images are stored only in those subfolders. I added Camera to the Pictures Library. In Fall Creators Update, the old Control Panel interface is still functional to set up a slideshow. To launch it, right-click Start, click Run and type:
Click OK.
Select Pictures Library, and select multiple pictures from the list.
Quick Tips: You can use the Check all or Clear all option to select or deselect all files, and then enable/disable the checkbox of individual files manually. Alternately, you can click an area and drag the mouse pointer (create a selection rectangle) to multi-select files without having to click on each file.
Method 2: List all images Using Search and Set as Desktop Background
Open the parent folder that has the subfolders containing images.
Click on the search box, and type the following search query:
Windows Search will list all image files from the parent folder as well as sub-folders. Select all or required image files from the search results, right-click and select Set as desktop background.
If you open the
Settings > Personalize > Background
page, you’ll see your search query in the list. That’s it! Desktop slideshow is now configured to use images from multiple folders and sub-folders.

Creating slideshows of your image files is an excellent way to show off your photographs, enhance a presentation, or just create a cool and unique background screen display. Windows 10 has some standard built-in tools for producing slideshows, and there are all kinds of third-party software packages available to give you more extensive slideshow options.

Set up a Desktop Slideshow in Windows 10
One easy way to create a slideshow is to use the slideshow wallpaper desktop options, which we briefly discussed in a “How to Customize the Windows 10 Desktop” tutorial article. With those options you can add your photo slideshow to the Windows desktop. You can right-click the desktop and select Personalize > Background to open the slideshow options shown directly below.
Select Slideshow from the Background drop-down menu. Then press the Browse button and select the folder that includes the images for the slideshow. The slideshow will display all the pictures in the folder. It’s that simple! Just create a folder with the images you want to display and copy your images to that folder; Windows will do the rest.
Click the Change picture every drop-down menu to configure how long each image is displayed on your desktop. There are no extra options to select transition effects with, but you can configure how the images fit on the desktop. Click the Choose a fit drop-down menu to adjust those settings. If your slideshow includes smaller images, you might need to select options such as Center or Fill.
Set up a Screen saver Slideshow
Alternatively, you could set up a photo slideshow as a screen saver. You can set up a screen saver slideshow by right-clicking the desktop, selecting Personalize > Themes and Theme Settings. Then select Screen Saver to open the window directly below.
Click the Screen saver drop-down menu and select Photos from there. Press Settings to open the window in the snapshot below. Click the Browse button to choose an image folder for the screen saver. Then you can also select three alternative slideshow speed settings from that window.
Press Save to close that window. You can then enter a time in the Wait text box. For example, if you enter 10 the screen saver will play after 10 minutes if you don’t move mouse. Then press Apply to confirm the selected screen saver settings.

Setting up a Slideshow with LibreOffice Impress
The Windows 10 slideshow options are somewhat limited. Joel from the last of us. It doesn’t include any options for transition effects or subtitles. As such, you might decide to set up a slideshow with third-party software. There are many programs you could set up a slideshow with, and one of those is the Impress presentation application that comes with the freeware LibreOffice suite.
You can add the LibreOffice suite to Windows 10, and other platforms, from this page. Press the Download Now button, and then click Windows as the OS and press the Download Version 5.1.2 button to save its setup wizard. Then run through the setup wizard to install the office suite and Impress (open this page for further details). Once you’ve added the suite, click LibreOffice Impress to open the window below.
Click the Properties button on the right toolbar to open a selection of slide layouts. Then right-click the Slides sidebar on the left and click New Slides to add new slides. Select a Blank Side layout from the Properties sidebar for all the slides included in the slideshow as below.
Next, right-click one of the blank slides and select Set Background Image for Slide. Then choose an image to include on the slide as below. Press No on the Page Setting window that pops up. Add one slideshow image to each of the slides.
Now press the Slide Transition button on the right toolbar. That will open a selection of slideshow transition effects as shown below. You can choose alternative transition effects for each of the slides. Alternatively, select an effect and press Apply to All Slides to include the same transition throughout the slideshow. Click the Play button at the bottom of the Slide Transition sidebar to preview the effects.
That sidebar also includes a couple of Advance Slide options. You can select the duration each slide displays for by clicking the Automaticallyafter radio button. Then input a time value in the text box, and press the Apply to All Slides button again to apply the setting to every image in the slideshow.
The best way to add subtitles to the slideshow is to select the Text Box option on the Drawing toolbar. Then drag and expand a text box on the image and enter some text in it. With the text box selected, click the Properties bar to open the formatting options shown below.
Then you can further format the text with the options there. You can choose new fonts for the box from the drop-down menu. Press the Bold, Italic, Underline, Shadow and Strikethrough buttons to add that formatting to the subtitle. Click Font Color to choose a suitable text color.
The best way to add a background soundtrack for the slideshow is to select the first slide, click the Sound drop-down menu and then select Other sound. Then choose a song to add to the slideshow. Don’t click the Apply to All Slides button as the soundtrack will then restart when each slide switches.
You can play your photo slideshow by selecting Slide Show on the menu bar and clicking Startfrom first Slide. That will play your slideshow from the beginning. You can press Esc to exit the presentation before it finishes.
Click File > Saveas to save your photo slideshow. Alternatively, press the Ctrl + Shift + S hotkey to open the Save As window. You could save it with a PowerPoint file format by clicking the Save as type drop-down menu and selecting a Microsoft PowerPoint format from there.
You can set up photo slideshows with Windows 10 options and apps, Impress or other additional software. The third-party software will certainly have more extensive options and transition effects, so it’s better to showcase photography with extra freeware programs.
